There has never been a greater need to have the knowledge to understand modern motor vehicle systems and the skill to be able to diagnose faults. Technology has been moving fast in the Automotive industry and it is no longer a question of weather you want to get involved with the new technology and venture into buying a code reader or scanner, it's here and on some vehicles you only have to change a battery and you have put a warning light on or several systems may need resetting since loosing their power.
Diagnostic fault finding is both challenging and rewarding. You get a great sense of achievement to succeed where others have failed or if it is your own car, the thought of saving the money in your pocket is a great feeling in its self.
Experience plays a great part in your ability to get results quickly but if you stick to a set Diagnostic process then rewards will follow. If you do not have basic understanding of Electrical circuits or you do not have the confidence to venture under the bonnet, then stop.
Guess work mechanics is a very expensive way of fault finding. You may even cause more faults than you fix. You very often see cars that originally had one fault but since doing the rounds has 3 more that are masking the original fault. Pinching o rings when reconnecting a pipe or spreading an electrical terminal with a probe to the point where it will not make a good connection when reconnected are all points that are over looked.
The following sections of the site will show you valuable information when it comes to Fault Diagnosis. |
